Al tiempo que protegían el racismo del electorado del Sur, los demócratas llegaron paradójicamente a atraer a las minorías del Norte, en particular a los católicos, los irlandeses y más tarde los italianos, oponiéndose así a los WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) que se veían a sí mismos como la base de la nación estadounidense amenazada por los recién llegados que no se ajustaban a esta identidad original. De este modo, el Partido Demócrata construyó un sólido bloque de apoyo entre las clases trabajadoras.

Los opositores demócratas y whigs acabaron fusionándose para formar el Partido Republicano en 1854. Su candidato, Abraham Lincoln, fue elegido Presidente sólo seis años después. El Partido Whig desapareció ese mismo año, estableciendo a Estados Unidos en un sistema bipartidista ininterrumpido, a pesar de las disensiones que a veces daban lugar a elecciones triangulares. Así ocurrió ya en las elecciones de 1860, cuando los demócratas presentaron dos candidatos, uno del Sur y otro del Norte.
El partido derrotado de la Guerra Civil
Los Estados del Sur, dirigidos por un demócrata, se separaron y sumieron a Estados Unidos en una guerra civil de 1861 a 1865. Tras el asesinato de Lincoln en 1865, su vicepresidente demócrata asumió su segundo mandato, que apenas había comenzado, y promovió una rápida reconciliación con el Sur.
Tuvo que enfrentarse al primer proceso de destitución de la historia de Estados Unidos, liderado por los republicanos radicales. Fracasó por un solo voto. Durante el llamado periodo de Reconstrucción, que duró hasta 1877, la mayoría de los estados rebeldes fueron, no obstante, privados del derecho de voto y puestos bajo administración militar, lo que supuso la retirada efectiva de los demócratas del poder federal.
Los demócratas se afirmaron cada vez más como el partido de los excluidos y de las minorías, aunque ello supusiera reunir a pioneros, emigrantes católicos o judíos y blancos del Sur segregado, que había sustituido la esclavitud por un sistema jurídico y social racista. La minoría afroamericana fue la única que se unió al Partido Republicano.
Los demócratas volvieron al poder brevemente en 1885 y 1893, sobre la base de reformas internas contra la corrupción y un programa económico liberal que atrajo al mercado de valores, pero alienó a parte del electorado popular. Los siguientes presidentes demócratas, Woodrow Wilson en 1912 y 1916, y sobre todo Franklin Delano Roosevelt a partir de 1932, aprendieron las lecciones de este fracaso y se apoyaron en adelante en el giro a la izquierda de su partido.
Al imponer el New Deal, una política de Estado del bienestar inspirada en el economista John Maynard Keynes, reveló la fuerza del Estado federal, rompiendo con la historia de su partido. También fue intervencionista frente al nazismo. Su sucesor, Harry S. Truman, vio frenadas sus ambiciones sociales y perdió el apoyo de los Estados del Sur, preocupados por su postura antisegregacionista.
Sin embargo, marcó un verdadero punto de inflexión para el Partido Demócrata, que con John Fitzgerald Kennedy -primer Presidente católico de Estados Unidos- lo amplió con el tema de la “Nueva Frontera”, el de los pobres que quieren acceder al “sueño americano”. Fue bajo su sucesor Lyndon B. Johnson, también demócrata, el Tribunal Supremo declaró inconstitucional la “segregación racial”.
Los jóvenes y los afroamericanos acudieron en masa a los demócratas. Los blancos del Sur se pasaron al Partido Republicano o siguieron a los disidentes demócratas del Partido Independiente Estadounidense, de extrema derecha. El Partido Demócrata pagó cara su coherencia moral. Sólo volviendo a centrarse en las cuestiones sociales pudo regresar al poder de forma duradera, con los dos mandatos de Bill Clinton, de 1993 a 2001.
No fue hasta 2008 y la presidencia de Barack Obama, primer presidente negro de Estados Unidos, cuando el Partido Demócrata reafirmó con éxito tanto sus raíces sociales como su defensa de las minorías. Sin embargo, tiene que enfrentarse a un Partido Republicano que, con Donald J. Trump, vuelve al poder sobre la base de posiciones extremadamente conservadoras y populistas, una papeleta que, por el momento, sólo ha asegurado al Grand Old Party un único mandato, concluido, además, a caballo de una crisis sin precedentes para la democracia estadounidense.
