Pekín celebra la Cumbre del FOCAC (Foro de Cooperación África-China), el mayor evento diplomático que China acoge en los últimos años. Estos tres días, la capital china reúne a más de 50 líderes africanos y representantes de organizaciones internacionales, como el secretario de la ONU, António Guterres.
El FOCAC se estableció en el año 2000 y desde entonces, China ha invertido más de 182.000 millones de dólares en el continente africano, sobre todo en proyectos de energía, transporte y telecomunicaciones.
El presidente chino, Xi Jinping, ha prometido en su discurso de apertura de la cumbre profundizar la cooperación con los países africanos en industria, agricultura, infraestructuras, comercio e inversión. En concreto, el Gobierno chino suministrará en los próximos tres años apoyo financiero por 50.700 millones de dólares y apoyará la creación de 1 millón de puestos de trabajo en África.
Este apoyo económico de China va acompañado de acuerdos comerciales en proyectos de transición energética y de construcción de líneas férreas en la parte oriental del continente.
Pekín estrecha sus lazos con África y reivindica su modelo de cooperación como alternativa para el Sur Global, poniendo el foco en acabar con la pobreza y avanzar en la modernización de los países en desarrollo.
En los próximos pasos, China impulsará este modelo de cooperación con los países de América Latina, región en la que China es la segunda socia comercial.
Un interés geopolítico
China, la segunda mayor economía del mundo, es el principal socio comercial de África y ha buscado acceder a los cuantiosos recursos naturales del continente, como cobre, oro, litio y tierras raras.
También ha suministrado a los países africanos miles de millones de dólares en préstamos que han ayudado a construir infraestructuras, aunque igualmente provocaron controversia por el endeudamiento que generan.
Numerosos analistas han señalado que la «generosidad» de Pekín con África podría verse disminuida ante los problemas económicos internos de China.
Al mismo tiempo, las disputas con Estados Unidos podrían influenciar cada vez más la política exterior de Pekín.
«Recibir a los africanos es de interés geopolítico para China, que quiere mantener a estos países de su lado ante su rivalidad con Estados Unidos», comentó a AFP Zainab Usman, directora del Programa de África del Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
