Por Milton Olivo
Nace aproximadamente en el año de 1496, era el heredero del Nitainato del Bahoruco, tributario del Cacicazgo de Xaragua o Jaragua, uno de los cincos reinos principales que había en la isla al tiempo de la llegada de Colon. (Nitainatos era la división política en que se dividían los Cacicazgos.
De no haberse producido la interrupción que para la civilización Taina significó la llegada de los Europeos a la isla, dicho Nitainato lo recibiría en herencia de su padre el Nitaíno Maniocatex, muerto en la Matanza de Jaragua, ordenada -mientras celebraban un acuerdo de paz- ordenado por el gobernador Nicolás de Ovando (1503).
Los religiosos Franciscanos de la ciudad de la Vera-Paz,(lugar cercano a lo que hoy es Puerto Príncipe) ciudad relativamente cercana al Bahoruco, la región montañosa de Jaragua. Estos religiosos -cuentan los cronistas- recogieron al Caciquillo de unos 7 años, en su convento y allí lo criaron y educaron. Así hicieron con la mayoría de los hijos de los príncipes Tainos.
Los Frailes le enseñaron a leer e escribir y gramática, para lo cual, necesariamente, tuvieron que adoctrinarlo en costumbres y en sentimientos. Hablaba bien el castellano. Hecho hombre a la sombra espiritual del monasterio, Enriquillo se caso con su prima, noble dama Taina llamada Mencía. La cual era hija de la princesa Higuemota, hija de la reina Anacaona y el Cacique Caonabo.
Sobre el físico del Cacique Enriquillo, coinciden Oviedo y Las Casas: «Era alto y gentil hombre, de cuerpo bien proporcionado y dispuesto, la cara no-tenia hermosa ni fea, pero tenía-la de hombre grave y severo». «El Cacique era sobrio de maneras y apetitos. No se excedía en el comer ni en el beber. Receloso y esquivo, no se confiaba fácilmente a nadie. Huidizo y despierto, como pollo de guinea,, hablaba poco y dormía menos». «Solo así, vigilante hasta de su propia sombra, pudo mantener durante catorce años la guerra del Bahoruco, sin ser nunca vencido, ni siquiera sorprendido». (Herrera op. cit. Década II. Libro V. Cap. I. Tomo II Pág. 94)
Las condiciones morales del Cacique eran, más que corrientes, relevantes. Religioso a carta cabal, no abandonó sus hábitos culturales, ni aun en los años de la rebelión, porque en el Bahoruco cumplía, hasta donde las circunstancias no lo vedaban, con los preceptos de la Iglesia. Las reglas de vida que impuso a los rebeldes eran severísimas. Espejo de sus propias costumbres y de las de Mencía su mujer. Nadie podía transgredirla, sin castigo. (Oviedo, HISTORIA GENERAL Y NATURAL DE LAS INDIAS, Ed. 1851, Tomo I, Págs. 157-158).
En lo que mira a su modo de hacer la guerra, es indiscutible que siempre se mantuvo en términos de estricta moderación, evitando el mal que no aprovechaba a su causa, e impidiendo que los suyos se excediesen en la venganza inútil y en los hechos atroces. (Las Casas, Op. cit. Libro II. Cap. CXXV. Tomo II. pag. 236).
Enriquillo fue encomendado al español Francisco de Valenzuela, colono de San Juan de la Maguana, con cuarenta y seis de sus súbditos. A Francisco Hernández, también de la Maguana, se le asignaron treinta y seis de los indios del Cacique. Alburquerque y Pasamonte en el reparto de 1514, confirmaron esta dos encomiendas (Casimiro N. de Moya, Op. cit., p. 190).
En 1519, hastiado de las injusticias hacia el y los suyos,- y del sistema de esclavitud impuesto, disfrazado con el termino de Encomienda- decide irse junto a su esposa Mencía -nieta de la reina Anacaona- en rebeldía, hacia las escarpadas montañas del Bahoruco.
Cuenta -Las Casas- que cuando Andrés Valenzuela se dio cuenta de que Huarocuya-Enriquillo, había abandonado sus servicios, salió a perseguirlo con gente española. El Cacique prevenido y dispuesto a defenderse le hizo resistencia a Valenzuela, le mató a algunos de lo suyos y descalabró a los más. Quisieron los indios acabar con Valenzuela y lo impidió el Cacique, amonestándolo de este modo: «Agradeced, Valenzuela, que no os mato; andad, íos y no volváis más acá, guardaos». Noble decisión, que hecha por tierra la perversa tesis de los antinacionales, que históricamente han pretendido rebajar la grandeza del héroe del Bahoruco, planteando de que su rebelión había sido su reacción porque Andrés Valenzuela le había violado y embarazado a Mencía.
Se mantuvo en guerra contra los españoles a ambos lado de las montañas del Bahoruco, asaltando las haciendas de los colonos, rescatando sus armas y repeliendo sus ataques,, hasta que, cansado de guerrear 14 años después, en 1533, pacta un acuerdo de paz, con el enviado del rey de España, el Capital General Francisco de Barrionuevo.
Las negociaciones con el enviado de la Corona el Capitán General Francisco de Barrionuevo fueron realizadas a la orilla del Lago del Comendador, el cual a partir de ahí, fue bautizado como “Lago Enriquillo”. Convirtiéndose por el éxito de sus negociaciones en el LIBERTADOR DE LOS QUISQUEYANOS.
Los acuerdos pactados en las negociaciones fueron: Libertad para el pueblo Taino con la eliminación de la Encomienda, no pago de impuesto a la corona, y un territorio libre para los suyos.
Según la tradición de la zona, el Cacique Enriquillo, negocio un territorio libre para los nativos, donde los europeos no tenían jurisdicción, área entre el Río Yuna y el Rio Guanuma, y la Sierra de Yamasá y Samaná. Se asentó en el área que es hoy la provincia de Monte Plata en el Yucateque (pueblo) de Boya. No en un supuesto Boya que la tierra se tragó en las inmediaciones de Azua como luego inventaron. Para dislocar el verdadero lugar del santuario de semejante líder.
Según antiquísima tradición en la zona, en la iglesia de Agua Santa de la comunidad de Boya en la Pcia. de Monte Plata, bajo esta construcción está ubicada la tumba del Libertador, el cual era un lugar de peregrinación por parte de los nativos, y por esa razón, los españoles decidieron construir sobre su tumba dicha Iglesia. También se afirma que el Cacique murió alrededor de 1536 de unos 40 años de edad.
Ahí descansan sin ninguna honra oficial los restos del Libertador de Quisqueya, a pesar del Decreto 6885 del 29 de Septiembre de 1950, aparecido en la Gaceta Oficial No. 7193 del 18 de Octubre de 1950, que consagra del 27 de Septiembre como Día del Héroe de Bahoruco.
