Polonia ha anunciado que dejará de enviar armas a Kiev, en medio de un creciente distanciamiento entre ambos países por el grano. «Ya no vamos a transferir armas a Ucrania», declaró el miércoles por la noche el Primer Ministro polaco, Mateusz Morawiecki.
«Nos estamos centrando principalmente en modernizar y armar rápidamente al ejército polaco, para que se convierta en uno de los ejércitos terrestres más poderosos de Europa». Varsovia ha aclarado desde entonces que terminará de enviar los cargamentos de armas comprometidos anteriormente. Todo lo que vaya más allá de esto aún se desconoce.
Polonia, antaño el más firme aliado de Kiev en su guerra contra Rusia, parece encontrarse ahora en el extremo opuesto del espectro. Algunos analistas lo achacan a la inminencia de las elecciones. Varsovia impone la prohibición del grano ucraniano para proteger a sus propios agricultores, que dicen que es imposible competir con sus importaciones más baratas.
La Comisión Europea declaró el jueves que nada ha cambiado en la relación de la UE con Ucrania, a pesar de la polémica. «Lo esencial es que la posición y la política de la UE siguen siendo las mismas, y que la política y la posición de la UE son un apoyo inquebrantable, firme y sin cambios a Ucrania durante todo el tiempo que sea necesario en todos los ámbitos en los que podemos apoyar a Ucrania, incluida la asistencia militar», declaró un portavoz de la Comisión.
El viernes pasado, la Comisión Europea decidió no prorrogar la prohibición temporal de la UE sobre el grano ucraniano, a pesar de los deseos de Polonia en sentido contrario.
Esto dejó un un mal sabor de boca a Varsovia, con varios críticos asegurando que Bruselas no ha hecho lo suficiente para satisfacer las necesidades de Polonia.
Para el eurodiputado verde alemán Sergey Lagodinsky, esta valoración es injusta. «La Comisión tiene una tarea difícil. Tenemos que asegurar la capacidad de Ucrania para sobrevivir también económicamente a través de esta guerra», dijo Lagodinsky a Euronews.
«Tenemos que garantizar vías seguras para los recursos y los alimentos al mundo, por un lado, y por otro, atender las preocupaciones polacas.
«Y creo que la Comisión ha hecho bien en dar prioridad a nuestra capacidad para ayudar a Ucrania en primer lugar, y después buscar formas de apoyar y abordar los problemas de Polonia».
Otro eurodiputado, Urmas Paet, que forma parte de la comisión de Asuntos Exteriores del Parlamento Europeo, afirmó que no cree que Varsovia vaya a dejar de enviar armas a Kiev. «Mi posición clara es que no va a ocurrir. Polonia sabe muy bien lo que está en juego», dijo Paet en una entrevista.
«Polonia sabe que también es de interés directo polaco y europeo que Ucrania reciba todo lo que necesita, también, en lo que se refiere a armas».
Independientemente de que Varsovia cumpla o no su amenaza, algunos expertos afirman que el daño ya está hecho, y las relaciones entre Polonia y Ucrania podrían tardar años en repararse.
