Washington.- La Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) pide que se estudien alternativas a una fuerza internacional para solucionar la grave crisis en Haití, ante la falta de acción por parte de las naciones para liderar esta iniciativa.
La representante especial de la ONU para Haití, María Isabel Salvador, señaló ayer a periodistas que se debe barajar incluso la opción de enviar casos azules al país caribeño.
La diplomática recordó que hace ya casi “un año” que el Gobierno haitiano pidió ayuda a la ONU para restaurar la seguridad en el país y que los miembros del organismo aún no han entregado una respuesta.
“Es normal que empecemos a pensar en otras posibilidades, como por ejemplo las fuerzas de paz de la ONU”, señaló Salvador, quien asumió el cargo el pasado marzo.
Pese al llamamiento del propio secretario general de la ONU, António Guterres, la idea de crear una fuerza multinacional para apoyar a la policía haitiana ha quedado en el aire, sin que ninguna nación se haya ofrecido para liderarla.
Ante este panorama, Salvador resaltó que es necesario que los países y organismos internacionales sean “innovadores y piensen de una manera distinta” para solventar la crisis de Haití.
La diplomática, no obstante, dijo que considera que las divisiones respecto a la situación haitiana se han ido cerrando en el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU.
“Hay una percepción general y clara de que Haití está en una situación muy peligrosa y que se necesita tomar algún tipo de acción”, subrayó.
Tanto Rusia como China, quienes tienen poder de veto en el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, se han mostrado reacios a la idea de enviar una fuerza para apoyar a las autoridades haitianas.
Caricom regresa
La ministra de Asuntos Exteriores y Comercio Exterior de Jamaica, Kamina Johnson, informó ayer que tres miembros del Grupo de Personalidades Eminentes (EPG, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom) viajó a Haití para ayudar a encontrar una solución a la crisis política y socioeconómica del país.
En una rueda de prensa, la ministra explicó que el ex primer ministro de Santa Lucía, Kenny Anthony, el jamaicano Bruce Golding y el bahameño Perry Christie se reunirán con el Gobierno haitiano y otras partes interesadas durante su estancia en Puerto Príncipe.
Experiencia
Entre 2004 y 2017, la ONU mantuvo una misión de paz en Haití, compuesta por casi 3.000 efectivos y liderada por el Ejecutivo brasileño.
