El 16 de mayo pasado, un agente de la PNC fue asesinado en el municipio de Nueva Concepción, ubicado a 73 kilómetros de San Salvador. En respuesta a este homicidio, se desplegó en la zona a más de 5.000 elementos del Ejército y la Policía.
Los presuntos responsables del crimen, tres miembros de la pandilla Mara Salvatrucha (MS13), fueron presentados a los medios de comunicación la noche del viernes. Fueron identificados como Salvador Portillo, José Ochoa y Francis Gómez.
La Asamblea Legislativa, que cuenta con una amplia mayoría oficialista, aprobó el 16 de mayo la decimocuarta prórroga de un régimen de excepción que ha estado vigente desde finales de marzo de 2022, en respuesta al aumento de los homicidios y que ha resultado en más de 69.000 detenciones.
La «ofensiva» contra los «residuos» de las pandillas se llevará a cabo en el contexto del cuarto año de gobierno del presidente Bukele. El mandatario cumplirá el próximo jueves su cuarto año al frente del Ejecutivo, periodo que se ha caracterizado por su «guerra» contra las maras, a través de polémicas medidas de régimen de excepción que han sido objeto de críticas por violar los derechos humanos, así como por su deseo de buscar la reelección en 2024.
