Los directores ejecutivos del Banco Mundial eligieron hoy a Ajay Banga presidente de dicha institución por un período de cinco años a partir del 2 de junio de 2023.
El Sr. Banga ocupó recientemente el cargo de vicepresidente de General Atlantic. Antes que eso, se desempeñó como presidente y director ejecutivo de Mastercard, una organización internacional de casi 24 000 empleados. Bajo su liderazgo, MasterCard puso en marcha el Centro para el Crecimiento Inclusivo, que promueve el crecimiento económico equitativo y sostenible y la inclusión financiera en todo el mundo. Fue presidente honorario de la Cámara Internacional de Comercio y ocupó la presidencia de dicha entidad entre 2020 y 2022. Adicionalmente, fue asesor del fondo de General Atlantic dedicado al clima, BeyondNetZero, al momento de su creación en 2021. Se desempeñó también como copresidente de la Alianza para Centroamérica, una coalición de organizaciones privadas que trabaja para promover oportunidades económicas en poblaciones desfavorecidas en El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras. Con anterioridad fue miembro de las juntas directivas de la Cruz Roja Americana, Kraft Foods y Dow Inc.
Es cofundador de The Cyber Readiness Institute y fue vicepresidente del Economic Club of New York. Recibió la Medalla de la Asociación de Política Exterior en 2012, el Premio Padma Shri otorgado por el presidente de la India en 2016, la Medalla de Honor de Ellis Island y el Premio al Liderazgo Global del Consejo Empresarial para el Entendimiento Internacional en 2019, y la Estrella al Servicio Público para los Amigos Destacados de Singapur en 2021.
Los directores ejecutivos siguieron el proceso de selección acordado por los accionistas en 2011. Dicho proceso incluyó la postulación abierta, transparente y basada en los méritos de los candidatos, en la que cualquier director ejecutivo o gobernador (a través de un director ejecutivo) podía proponer a un ciudadano de cualquier país miembro del Banco. Luego los directores ejecutivos llevaron adelante un exhaustivo procedimiento de diligencia debida referido al Sr. Banga y mantuvieron con él una extensa entrevista.
El Directorio tiene mucho interés en trabajar con el Sr. Banga en el proceso de evolución del Grupo Banco Mundial (i), analizado en las Reuniones de Primavera de abril de 2023, así como en todas las metas e iniciativas del Grupo Banco Mundial dirigidas a abordar los desafíos de desarrollo más complejos que enfrentan los países en desarrollo.
El presidente del Grupo Banco Mundial también es presidente del Directorio Ejecutivo del Banco Internacional de Reconstrucción y Fomento (BIRF), y presidente de oficio del Directorio Ejecutivo de la Asociación Internacional de Fomento (AIF), de las Juntas de Directores de la Corporación Financiera Internacional (IFC) y del Organismo Multilateral de Garantía de Inversiones (MIGA), y del Consejo Administrativo del Centro Internacional de Arreglo de Diferencias Relativas a Inversiones (CIADI).
