“Mejor ser dictador que gay”. Esta frase brutal, escupida al mundo en 2012 por el dictador de Bielorrusia, Alexander Lukashenko, no solo retrata al hombre fuerte de ese país, sino también a Vladimir Putin. La frase muestra muy bien de que están hechos ambos autócratas. En ella caben los dos.
Y es que Putin y su régimen puntean en el ranking planetario de la reacción. El propósito imperialista del caudillo ruso tiene un contenido fuertemente moral y religioso de lo más rancio. En cada uno de sus discursos se advierte fácilmente la cruzada anti moderna que lo anima. La empatía entre él y Donald Trump, gira en torno al alegato a favor que los dos líderes populistas hacen de los valores más retardatarios. En ocasión de la victoria electoral del expresidente estadounidense, Putin expresó que compartía con este la defensa de los valores tradicionales; el triunfo del magnate simbolizaba, según el jefe del Kremlin, el triunfo de las ideas respecto a lo que el mundo debería ser.
Y es que el mundo ha batallado mucho para deslastrarse de lo que Putin quisiera que volviera a ser.
En un portentoso estudio sociológico elaborado por los académicos Ronald Inglehart y Christian Welzel, se mostró la relación entre el desarrollo económico, el cambio social y la democracia. Concluyen los autores en que la esencia de esta última es el poder de la gente. Este poder se conecta con lo que ellos denominan “valores de autoexpresión’’ o “valores de emancipación’’, los cuales se traducen en autonomía y poder de selección de cada ser humano. Tales valores son propios de las sociedades occidentales más avanzadas.
En la modernidad tardía, las relaciones sociales se han desenclavado de sus condiciones locales y los valores e institucionalidad universalistas, han afianzado la búsqueda de la “identidad del yo”, de acuerdo a Anthony Giddens. Según el sociólogo inglés, la misma se expresa en la realización del individuo a partir de lo que el autor refiere como “política de la vida”. Al contrario de las identidades fijas de la Europa medieval en la cual el linaje, el género, el estatus social, estaban relativamente determinados, cada persona tiene ahora la posibilidad de descubrir su propia identidad personal en un contexto de libertades de carácter cosmopolita. El slogan “lo personal es político” acuñado por el feminismo, marca los nuevos tiempos. La experiencia privada de cualquier tipo, exige ahora respeto y legitimidad en el espacio público.
Frente a estas nuevas condiciones sociales, un pensamiento como el de Vladimir Putin, asoma un peligro de considerables proporciones. En verdad, la ideología de muchos movimientos populistas, como ha puesto de relieve Angus Stewart, incluye el rechazo de las instituciones y la cultura europeas. Putin es enemigo de Europa, porque Europa es universal. Y esa universalidad está expresada fundamentalmente en los valores democráticos que definen la europeidad luego de la segunda guerra.
Putin se nos muestra como el titán que personifica los deseos y el destino de la sociedad rusa; destino que no es otro que reconquistar la grandeza perdida no tanto de la Unión Soviética, sino de la Rusia de los zares. En verdad, mucho más tiene que ver Putin con los zares que con los bolcheviques, al contrario de lo que, interesada o ingenuamente, algunos creen. Putin actúa como un zar redivivo. Se concentra en el pasado, recurriendo incluso a la forja de tradiciones por parte de sus asesores. Putin fabrica una utopía que mira hacia atrás.
Los estados postsoviéticos poseen una cultura marcadamente tradicional. Esto facilita las cosas a Putin quien construye su programa apoyándose vigorosamente en los elementos patriótico, militar y religioso. La homofobia se ha convertido en la punta de lanza del discurso oficial desmesuradamente reaccionario. La homosexualidad es exhibida como una amenaza de satanás proveniente de Europa. Así, el vocablo Yevropa, que en ruso significa Europa, se convierte en gayropa en algunos canales de la televisión del Estado. La mujer es exaltada como madre de familia y se le exige estar siempre hermosa y bien arreglada. Esta visión nos hace recordar el manual de la buena esposa vigente durante la España del franquismo.
Los textos de historia han sido modificados de modo de hacerlos compatibles con la narrativa de la magnificencia rusa. En 2015 se creó el Movimiento Ruso de Escolares, con una rama militarizada que recibe el nombre de Yunarmia, vocablo que significa Joven Ejército.
Putin y el kremlin han encontrado en la iglesia ortodoxa uno de sus respaldos fundamentales. El Parlamento ruso promulgó una ley en 2010 que devolvió a la iglesia sus propiedades confiscadas en tiempos de la revolución. Con ello, la iglesia se transformó en una de los más importantes propietarios inmobiliarios del país. De modo que la alianza entre Putin y el patriarca Kirill, jefe supremo de aquella iglesia, pareciera inquebrantable. Putin y Kirill construyen un solo relato. En uno de sus sermones, Kirill se refirió a la guerra de Ucrania como una lucha contra la promoción de modos de vida “pecaminosos” atentatorios contra la religión cristiana. En sus palabras, una manifestación “terrible” de este hecho, fue el desfile del orgullo gay celebrado en Kiev en 2019. Por su parte Putin en uno de sus últimos discursos, ha afirmado que los libros principales de todas las religiones indican que “la familia es la unión de un hombre y una mujer’’ en exclusivo. Estos textos sagrados, sin embargo, afirmó, están siendo cuestionados por Occidente de manera que los “sacerdotes son obligados a bendecir matrimonios del mismo sexo’’. Tanto el uno como el otro, se muestran como campeones de la pureza cultural y religiosa contra el envilecimiento de las sociedades occidentales. La ley que prohíbe declaraciones públicas en respaldo al colectivo LGTBI, la cual se amplía hasta la censura de las conversaciones de adultos y a la producción cultural por considerarlas ofensas a Dios, constituye una agresión sin límites a los derechos humanos.
