Amnistía Internacional ha publicado hoy su último informe sobre condenas a muerte y ejecuciones, destacando que en 2021 se llevaron a cabo al menos 579 ejecuciones en 18 países, un aumento del 20% sobre el total registrado en 2020. La organización asegura que gran parte de este aumento es para Irán, que ejecutó al menos a 314 personas (frente a 246 en 2020).
Pese a este aumento, la ONG señala que el total de ejecuciones registradas el año pasado constituye la segunda cifra más baja, tras la de 2020, que documenta desde al menos 2010. Hay que tener en cuenta que esta cifra global no incluye a las personas. Se ha ejecutado a sospechosos en China, Corea del Norte y Vietnam, cuyo número es difícil de estimar. La organización de derechos humanos destaca que «el secretismo y el acceso restringido a la información en el caso de estos tres países impidieron un seguimiento riguroso de estas ejecuciones».
En el caso de China, el país lidera con diferencia el ranking de los mayores verdugos del mundo, siendo «el mayor verdugo del mundo», según la ONG, que cree que el año pasado ejecutó a miles de personas. Sin tener en cuenta «el gran número de ejecuciones» que se cree que han tenido lugar en Corea del Norte y Vietnam y cuyo número ha sido imposible determinar, al gigante asiático le siguen Irán (con al menos 314 ejecuciones registradas), Egipto (con un mínimo de 83) y Arabia Saudí (con 65). Detrás quedan Siria, Somalia, Irak y Yemen. La lista de los diez países que más personas ejecutaron en 2021 la completan Estados Unidos, con 11 ejecuciones, y Sudán del Sur, con al menos 9.
